Unit 1:  Online Safety & Digital Citizenship

In unit 1, students will be enrolled in the online digital citizenship course on WWW.EVERFI.COM.  Entitled: Ignition – Digital Literacy & Responsibility, this course combines the power of gaming, interactive learning and engaging instructional design to educate teens on the risks and rewards of technology. The curriculum aligns with the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS), established by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), and fulfills the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) objectives.

Assignments:

Unit 2:  Computer Basics

Unit 2 will help you understand how computers work and how to use them. We’ll talk about how to set up a computer, the difference between hardware and software, and the types of computers you can use. We’ll also explore operating systems, applications, and the cloud.

Unit 3:  Working with Word-Processing Software

Word processing is one of the most frequently used software programs on a computer, with Microsoft Word being the most popular word processor.  People use it for writing letters, reports, brochures, advertising flyers, booklets, novels… anything with words. All word processing programs today can handle the basics of writing a letter or a school report. Whether or not you need fancier features will depend on exactly what you need to do and how often you will need to do it.  In this unit, you will learn the basic features and several of the more advanced features of Microsoft Word. Assignments:

Unit 4:  Working with Spreadsheet Software

Also referred to as a worksheet, a spreadsheet is a file made of rows and columns that help sort data, arrange data easily, and calculate numerical data. What makes a spreadsheet software program unique is its ability to calculate values using mathematical formulas and the data in cells. A good example of how a spreadsheet may be utilized is creating an overview of your bank’s balance.  (http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/s/spreadsh.htm)

Unit 4 will teach you a lot about spreadsheets – entering, moving, and editing cell data; formatting data and labels; creating and editing charts; working with formulas.

Unit 5:  Working with Presentation Software

A presentation program lets you create slides to show pictures and data to a large group. Presentation programs such as Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides do much more than just turn your outline into a set of bullet points. You can add video and animations, show charts a piece at a time, and keep the audience focused on the main points with attractive slides and bullet points. In this unit, you will learn how to create, edit, and run a presentation. You will also learn how to put your presentation into hard copy and into a self-running format.

Unit 6:  Web Programming

The projects in this unit will take you a long way toward understanding and working with the Internet, and with the World Wide Web in particular. You will learn how to surf the Web, visiting web sites around the world. You will learn to search the world’s web pages for specific information and for general topics. You will even learn how to create a simple web page with HTML using a plain text editor. Assignments:
